FMCA Rally in Indio

Sunday, January 10, 2010                                                                                                 Lorraine’s report

Phew, another busy week. We are still here in Palm Springs, CA at Thousand Trails RV Park.

Last Sunday, Susy, Mark, & Kaitlyn were with us over night. They left Sunday evening, after a busy afternoon on their way to Disneyland. They had a fun time with us and a fun time in Disneyland.

Some of you may remember that we belong to the Family Motor Coach Association Frustrated Maestros. This week starting Thursday the FMCA was having their annual rally here in Indio, CA. We have gone to this rally the past two years; last year was my first year singing with the Maestros. This past week and starting on January 2, the Maestros met and practiced twice a day until the rally started. This year we did not go to the pre-rally, choosing instead to stay here with full hook ups, and not dry camping with only 30 amp for the week, at an extra cost. So Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Chuck drove me over to the Fair Grounds for practice and sometimes happy hour with the group.

Thursday the rally started and the group had to be ready for the tram ride over to the stage area by 6:15 am. Now as most of our family and friends know, I am not an early riser. But, I have to tell you, I was up by 4:45 am and we were at the pick up area by 6:10 every morning.

The Frustrated Maestros sang every morning from 7 am to 9 am; there aren’t many people up to see us sing at 7 am, but each morning by 8:15 to 8:30 there were a lot of people watching us perform. For the closing the Maestros salute the armed forces, with a tribute to America, and the audience is encouraged to participate; it is really a very moving experience for all.

Saturday, our friends, Joe and Alice came over to the rally after the show, and we walked around the fair grounds with them. We went to the ice cream social and then headed out to Augustine Casino for the lunch buffet. It was fun to see them again, since we may not see them until later this year back home.

And I have to thank Tom and Dorothy, our friends who went to Alaska last summer with us, for letting us use your coach as a home base, and letting us bring Misty dog over to your coach during the day. We really appreciated your kindnesses. Thank you!

So that was our week. Until next time…Lorraine

1/1010                                                                                                                                 Chuck’s report

This was a week filled with some long, fun days.  The Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) Rally was held nearby in Indio.  Lorraine and I joined this organization our first year on the road and we have been to Rallies in four  different states.  Lorraine joined one of their Chapters called The Frustrated Maestros at our first Rally.  The Maestros get together at these rallies to play music and sing for the crowd.  They also have practice at least once a day, sometimes twice, before the rally starts.  We have made lots of friends in the past and always look forward to seeing them again.

When we stay at the rally, we only have limited electrical power, no water or sewer hookups.  This year we decided to keep our rig at 1000 Trails and just drive over to the Rally each day, about 8 miles away.  That isn’t too bad for a practice or happy hour but they start singing each morning at 7:00.  That meant we had to get up by 4:30 to get ready, drive over, have a donut and coffee and get set up by 6:45.  They entertain for two hours each morning while everyone else comes in for donuts and coffee.  I don’t sing, I’m more there for moral support and try to help when I can.

The Maestros sang each morning from Thursday thru Sunday.  People come and go throughout the session, some sit and listen for awhile, others just get their coffee and donut and leave.  We didn’t go over there this morning, stayed home and slept in.

The rally also has lots of venders trying to sell stuff you just can’t live without, seminars about RVing and displays of new/used coaches and entertainment each night.  After they were done singing, we usually went to a seminar or two or back to Tom/Dorothy’s coach to visit.  They were nice enough to allow us to let our dog stay in their coach while we were there, kept us from having to return to our coach to walk her every few hours.

Our friends Joe/Alice are staying in Hemet, about an hour away from here.  They came over on Saturday to see us and go to the rally.  We left the rally sometime after noon and picked some lemons and grapefruit from some trees where they had parked.  Later we went with them to a lunch buffet at a local casino.  We always have a fun time with these good friends and are sad when they leave.

So even though we were tired from the early morning starts, we both agreed we enjoyed the rally and the friends visited with.  Of course, I did manage to buy a couple of items I just couldn’t live without and got some information I can put to good use.

The weather has sure been nice here, in the mid 70s during the day, mid 40s at night with low humidity.  We were able to watch Alabama beat Texas in the College Football Championship game the other night, too bad Texas lost their starting quarterback early in the game.  Texas still managed to make a good comeback.  Although it was a good game, it may have been a better game if their normal quarterback played the whole game.  The place kicker for Alabama is the grandson of Bob Tiffin who owns Tiffin Motorhomes, the builder of our coach.  I’m sure he has a job when his football career is over.

A couple of weeks ago I said we had finally made up our minds and we going back to Alabama for repairs.  Well of course, once again we make plans and God laughs.  I was contacted by a friend I used to work with and they asked if I would be willing to work a few weeks this spring to help them out during a busy time.  I accepted and now we are just waiting to find out if they can get the official permission for me to go back to work.  They actually have to ask headquarters in London before they can make the official offer.

The time they need me conflicts with our schedule for heading back East.  So in the meantime, we now have two schedules, one if we go back to Washington and one if we head East.   I’m hoping we get this worked out early this week so we can finalize our schedule one way or the other.  We will get our coach repairs done either in Chino, California or in Red Bay, Alabama, depending on this decision and need to let the repair shops know as soon as possible too.

But for now, our short term schedule isn’t any different from last week.  We leave here Wednesday, head to Ehrenberg, AZ until we go to Quartzsite next Saturday.  We plan on heading to Yuma on the 21st and will be there for 10 days or so.  Its after Yuma that our itinerary will change if we go back to Washington this spring.

And now for some pictures of the week.

Back in Palm Springs

Sunday, January 03, 2010                                                                                                      Lorraine’s report

We want to wish a Happy New Year to all our family and friends! May your troubles be few, your friends many and your health great.

We had a quiet New Year’s Eve dinner out with Tom & Dorothy, and were home before the Big Crystal Ball dropped in New York City at midnight, Eastern Standard Time. I think Chuck went to bed by 9:30- 9:45 and I was in bed by 10:30 PST. We were all tired and happy to head to bed early.

This week has passed quickly, and we are here again at Thousand Trails, Palm Springs. The weather has been warm during the days, and I only need one extra throw on my side of the bed, instead of the two plus the winter weight down blanket we’ve used since this summer in Alaska. It’s so nice to be here with the palm trees all over.

We sure had it pour on us at Bakersfield, when we left there on Wednesday. While at the Orange Grove RV Park, Chuck and I picked a bunch of oranges; they were ripe and are so sweet and juicy, just delicious. We left the bay area on Tuesday. Susy, Mark and Kaitlyn left on Monday to head over to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, to see their alma mater, Stanford play. It was a long ride for them, but they just left here tonight, on their way to Disneyland before they head home on Tuesday. They enjoyed their trip and the game, even though Stanford lost to Oklahoma.

We’ve slowed things down a whole lot; there are days I’m still not up to par since I was so ill before Christmas; taking down Christmas here in the coach, packing it all away and moving sure tired me out. It’s nice to slow everything down and take it easier.

As I mentioned earlier, Susy, Mark, and Kaitlyn spent Saturday night and today, Sunday with us here in the coach. It was great to have them all stay with us for the night. They girls stayed in the big bed and they guys had the couch and chairs. Kaitlyn slept next to me all night, she is such a heat seeker. We loved having them! We will not see them for a few months, probably until April, when Kaitlyn turns five years old on her birthday.

Until next time, be well. Lorraine

Sunday 1/3/10                                                                                                                    Chuck’s report

It probably sounds like a broken record, Bay Area to Palm Springs to Bay Area and back to Palm Springs.  We’ve been in/out of Susy, Mark and Kaitlyn’s life since before Halloween but we probably won’t see them for awhile again.  They left their house on Monday last week, drove to El Paso, TX. for the Sun Bowl.  We left their area on Tuesday, headed back here.  We took down all our Christmas decorations and stored them in Susy’s garage, thanks for that.

Susy, Mark and Kaitlyn stopped in here on Saturday evening for one day on their way back home.  Lorraine will probably fly back for Kaitlyn’s birthday in April, not sure when I’ll see them though.  Thanks for allowing us to spend time with you, it sure makes our day.

Lorraine and Susy managed to get some time out this afternoon and we all went out to dinner later.  After dinner we finished loading up their car and they left, headed for Disneyland for a couple of days.  I guess Disney is taking down all the Christmas decorations tomorrow and they wanted to see them tonight.  Makes for a long day, sure glad they spent part of it with us however.

We had a quiet trip over, made our usual stop in Bakersfield for one night then on to here the next day.  Boy is this place busy this time of the year.  They have over 400 sites and most of the time there is less than ten empty each night.  I talked with one of the Rangers, he said they had over 130 people coming in on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day.  That meant that many had to be leaving too, it was busy each day with all the comings and goings, seemed a bit slower today although they are still pretty full.

I’m sure not in traveling shape, two days of driving left me beat.  We got here, got set up and that was it for me, I was tired.  The next day Lorraine called our friends Tom/Dorothy and set up a meeting with them over dinner.  We were finished eating and visiting and back at our coach before 9:00.  We watched the ball fall in New York and I called it day, that was our exciting New Year’s Eve.  Getting too old to stay up until midnight I guess.

Lorraine “made” me watch football all week, the college bowl games and pros on the weekend and they still aren’t done yet.  There were lots of good games, sometimes the team I was rooting for actually won too.

The weather here is sure nice, it’s been getting into the low 70s in the afternoon, cooling off to low 40s at night.  I haven’t taken the opportunity to change into shorts vs.. long pants yet but if it gets just a bit warmer - - - .  We do notice the lower humidity too, Lorraine says it seems to be warmer even though we have the coach at the same temperature as in the Bay area.  Last time we were here I spent some time washing our coach, it needs it again so I probably will take a day or two this week and get it cleaned up again.

Last week I mentioned we made our minds up to travel back to Alabama and asked for ideas of things/places to see/do in the Southeast this spring.  Thanks for the suggestions, we have some of them penciled in as probable stops.  We have been in Alabama two times before, a quick trip when we picked up our new coach in April, ‘07 and a year later for 5 weeks for our first year’s warranty work back at the factory.  I hope this time we can get in/out in about three weeks and then spend more time exploring the area before it gets too hot and humid.

This week and over the upcoming weekend is the Family Motor Coach Association (FMCA) rally here in in Indio.  We are going to stay here at 1000 Trails, driving over to visit with our friends and see the displays.  Not sure yet if we will get there in time for Lorraine to partake with the Maestros for their morning singing sessions but we will for sure stop by and visit with them.  We plan to stay here until the 13th then head for Quartzsite for what is becoming our annual visit there.  We plan on pulling into our spot in the BLM on Saturday the 16th.

And now for a few pictures of our week.

Part of the trip over.  Yes, we did get a lot of rain that night in Bakersfield and the next morning.

We sure don’t lead a very interesting life I guess, seems like we were busier than what this note sounds like.  But whatever, that was our week once again.

Still in the Bay Area

Sunday, December 27, 2009                                                                                                  Lorraine’s report

I hope everyone had a great Christmas! We did! We spent the day with our little family here in Sunnyvale, CA. The day was sunny, bright and cold. Susy, Mark and Kaitlyn, we thank you for such a great Christmas Day.

Well, last Sunday, I woke up not feeling well. Little did I know that I was at the start of a bout of either stomach flu or food poisoning. I was reminded of when I went through my chemo treatment. Chuck took me in to the emergency room at 5 am on Monday morning, I just couldn’t stop the throwing up and diarrhea. They did a bunch of tests, but the doc couldn’t say what it was for sure, they just gave me an IV for fluids, a shot of morphine for the pain and sent me home, after six hours in the broken bones supply room, where they put me when we checked into the hospital. My bout of being ill lasted until the morning of the 23rd, when I woke up feeling a bit better. I wasn’t able to eat solids until the 26th, and I’m still cold, having a hard time getting and staying warm. This wasn’t how I wanted to spend the pre-Christmas holiday.

I had plans to do other things before Christmas, but that didn’t happen. I was happy to just be able to go over to our daughter’s for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

We had a great time watching our little granddaughter, Kaitlyn open her presents. She had a blast, and we greatly enjoyed watching her.

After the presents were put away and Susy’s home was cleaned up, Mark took us to a movie. Susy, Mark, Kaitlyn and I went to see the Frog and the Princess. It was a good movie; Kaitlyn wants us to buy it when it comes out, she enjoyed it so much.

The only problem was Mark lost the car keys with a bunch of other keys on his key ring at the theater. He doesn’t know where or how they got lost, but they did, so he spent Saturday afternoon at the dealer to get the car retooled for new keys.

Saturday, Susy and I went to return a couple of presents that were not quite right. We came home just as it started to pour here; it sure did dump on us.

Not too much more to write about; it’s been nice to slow down a bit. Anyhow, I want to wish all our family and friends a belated Merry Christmas and many Blessings and a Healthy, Happy New Year! May God be good to you and yours!

Until next time…..Lorraine

12/27/09                                                                                                                            Chuck’s report

Well, I’m glad that week is over.  If you read our blog from last week, you know Lorraine wasn’t feeling well and didn’t write her part.  Well, on Monday I took her to the emergency room at 5:00 in the morning.  Actually a good time to go to the ER, we got right in but had to wait for the doctor.  Anyway, they ran a bunch of blood tests, had a Cat Scan and X-ray but could find anything for sure.  They think it was either food poisoning or a stomach bug that has been going around.   She sure was one sick gal for about 3 or 4 days there.

She was released about 3:00 with a couple of prescriptions and a “I hope you feel better” comment.  I got her home and put to bed then went out to fill her prescriptions.  Boy was that fun, first one wouldn’t fill it, second was closed, third didn’t have one of the pills, fourth filled one but not the second, finally got what I needed at the fifth one.

She was still down on Tuesday, but started feeling a bit better in the afternoon.  She has been feeling a bit better each day so I think it was the bug but not sure.  Main thing is she’s getting better and able to spend time with Kaitlyn before we leave.  She didn’t leave the coach until we went out to dinner on Christmas eve, only had soup however.

I’ve been searching for a set of tires for our car, they’re pretty big at 19”.  I checked the normal places and got prices ranging from $950 to $1500.  I checked on line and found I could by them for $95 each.  I then called and tried to get price match from a couple of places.  Discount tire said they would match the internet price and only charge $20/tire for mounting/balancing and tire disposal.  So I got a set of new Goodyear tires for a pretty good price, an early Christmas present.

We spent Christmas morning at Susy’s, really enjoyed watching Kaitlyn open her presents, she was so excited.  Lorraine, Susy, Mark and Kaitlyn went to the movie house to see a matinee, I came back to the coach.  Later we went out to Christmas dinner where Lorraine was able to eat a little bit of solid food.

Mark and Susy both graduated from Stanford University, both of them work there now.  The Stanford football team in playing in a bowl game at El Paso, Tx. on Thursday.  They want to drive over, taking a much needed vacation.  They leave tomorrow, we leave for Palm Springs on Tuesday.   They will stop by and see us on their way home after the game, it’s on the way.   That may be the last time we see them until Kaitlyn’s birthday in April.  Once again, thanks to Susy and Mark for sharing their time and home with us, we sure appreciate it.

We’ve finally made our minds up, decided we will go to Red Bay, Alabama for some coach repairs at the factory.  We plan on being there on March 4th.  I spent a couple of hours working out our route and schedule so we at least have an idea of when/where we will be going on the trip.  We are also working on getting all our items on the work list, want to make sure we get everything done while we are there.

We will probably spend the spring traveling around the SE states, we’ve never spent any time there except for a two weeks stint in Atlanta a few years ago.  We haven’t worked out any schedule or even made a wish list for the spring yet, will need to work on that.  We are thinking about Georgia, N&S Carolina and Virginia.  We’ve never been to Washington DC so we may head that way too.  So if anyone has any places you think we have to see, please let us know.

Our short range plans are to spend the most of the next two weeks in Palm Springs.  Susy will be stopping by on their way home, there is a FMCA rally we plan to attend plus we really like the area and weather.  Afterwards we will head for Quartzsite, Az for the annual RV week boon docking with our friends from the RV America group.  After that, we start our trek to the East.

We are well into our third year of full timing and don’t see an end in sight yet, YEA.  We don’t know where the road will lead us this year but we are more experienced about what we do now.  We don’t travel fast or far like we are on vacation, rather we try to see and explore the area more.

I would be remiss is I didn’t wish everyone a Happy New Year.  Here’s hoping you had a great ‘09 and wishing you a better one for ‘10!

And now for some pictures.

Here are some oranges on the tree, some ripening, some still very green.
