We’re in Birch Bay, Washington

Sunday  September 13, 2009                                                                                             Lorraine’s Report

It sure is nice to be home, if even for a short period of time.  We made a hard run to get back here in time so I could see our grand daughter, Kaitlyn, Susy and Mark, who were going to be in Seattle over Labor Day. In June when Susy asked where we were going to be, I thought we would still be on our Alaska trip.  That ended in a big hurry when Tom and Dorothy had the rock go through their radiator.  It was so hard to leave them, and they still haven’t shown up here on their way south to California and home.

We were gone 5 days short of three months and 5 miles short of six thousand miles round trip.  That was quite a big trip, we did so much, saw wonderful things, and had a great time doing all we could.  I would do it all again, if given the chance.

Since we’ve been home, we eaten out a whole bunch.  My sister, Thelma and BIL, John have had us and the whole family over for dinner, with a hot  game of Mexican Train going on until late at night.  We’ve gone with them to the $2.00 Tuesday buffet at Nooksack Casino twice, we’ve been to the Prime Rib and Seafood buffet at Silver Reef Casino with friends Richard and Sandy, who got married at the end of June, and with friends Rick and Joy, who are on vacation, coming from Squamish, BC.

Chuck has been busy cleaning both the coach and the car, and has helped me with the inside.  We still need to shampoo the carpet and take the rugs and my king sized comforter for cleaning in a big washing machine at the laundry, since they will not fit into my washer/dryer.  We’ve restocked some of the supplies that ran out, and  we bought a small freezer for the motor home.  We wanted it before we went to Alaska, but they wanted too much for it.  It was on end of the season sale when we bought it. Chuck has been busy repairing all the things that broke on the trip, also.  Thank goodness he is such a great handyman.

The best part of being back is, I’ve been sleeping in, and Chuck has even come back to bed to catch up on his rest.  We were both so tired; the roads in Yukon, with it’s frost heaves and all the rough roads and road work in Canada, made for a pretty hard ride back home.

I also love having the warmer weather.  It felt like fall had already arrived in Alaska, while here it is still summer like.

So now we will be leaving shortly.  I love being home and will miss my sister and her family and all the fun times we have at all the holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries. I will miss all our friends, too.

So until next time….Take care and be well.

9/13/09                                                                                                                              Chuck’s report

We didn’t do our normal weekly posting last week and this one will be pretty bare too.  We are in Birch Bay, Washington at 1000 Trails campground.  We made it back to Washington on September 1st after our trip to Alaska.

Our daughter and grand daughter were able to come to our place last Sunday, spent the night and our son-in-law picked them up on Monday evening.  We enjoyed our time with them, Lorraine was able to get some baby time which she sure likes.

During the past two weeks, we spend some time with Lorraine’s sister and her family at their house and went to the $2.00 Buffet on Tuesday last week and this week with them.  They were also kind enough to allow us to store our salmon in their freezer, thanks for that.  We finally found and bought a small freezer that fit in our basement storage, something we probably should have done before we left for Alaska.

We went to dinner one night with Richard/Sandy, the folks who got married in June and allowed us to stand up for them.

We also went to a buffet dinner with our friends who are down from Canada, Rick/Joy.   They went with us to Mount Vernon yesterday, we stopped at Costco and Camping World.

The trip to Alaska was hard on the motorhome, car and us.  We’ve got the car and motorhome looking much better now, boy is that Alaska and Canadian mud hard to get off.  I also spent the best part of a day cleaning the woodwork in the rig, the only time I don’t like having that much wood.

I was able to get the parts to repair the heater hose that ruptured on us in late August.  The rescue tape we used held up until I could get the parts, I’ll get more of that stuff for sure.  I haven’t been able to find the correct antifreeze yet but when we get it, I’ll have to dump, flush and refill the system.

The window shades on our windshield fell down while driving through a construction area in British Columbia on the way back.  I called the factory and ordered the part that busted and was able to put everything back together and get it working correctly.  The hardest part was hooking up the electrical portion, I had to cut all the wires when it fell as we were on the side of the road blocking traffic.  It’s nice to have the shades back up again, we were using a bed sheet for over a week and it didn’t block the light too well.

Our rig has a propane stove top with two burners.  Once of the burners has been giving Lorraine problems, it wouldn’t stay lit.  I was able to get it adjusted so it works again, she didn’t like having to cook using just the one burner.

I also got the leaking tire on our car fixed.  I’ve had it to two shops, both said it was a leaking pressure sensor but this time I asked them to take the tire off the rim and check it out.  Sure enough, there was a screw in it that was causing a slow leak.  It’s held pressure since and it sure is nice to not have to add air every other day.

We like being back here, we know the area and where to find the stuff we are looking for.  Everyone tells us they had a very nice summer, in fact, last weekend there was more rain than they’ve had since we left in June.  The weather  has been nice with only two days of rain since we’ve been back.  It’s getting back to summer type weather this weekend, got to 80 degrees Saturday and cools off in the evenings.

Our plans are to start heading towards North Dakota, need to be there by 9/23 for about three weeks.  We sure hope they don’t have an early winter back there.  While there, we will also try to meet up with our friends Dave/Sandy from Minnesota.  After that, we will head back to the West coast with plans to be at our daughter’s place for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

So, that was our last two weeks and a little look forward into our plans.  I don’t have any pictures to add to this post so will close and try to get it uploaded.   So until next time - - Chuck
