We’re still in Yuma, AZ

February 2, 2013                                                                                                            Lorraine’s report

Hello from Yuma.  We are at Fortuna De Oro until Monday, when we plan on moving on.  It’s been another busy week for us.  We’ve gone to Mexico for dentist appointments, visited with friends, had a birthday party and just enjoyed our friends and our life style.

This week we had dentist appointments, Chuck went in first, then me.  He was fine. no problems.  I on the other hand had a lump over my right upper jaw. Before the cleaning it didn’t even hurt, afterwards-it did.  I didn’t think anything of it until the dentist said I have an infected tooth, under a cap, and the tooth was infected, clear into the jaw.  He said I had to get my doctor in Sunnyvale to give me an a-okay before I could have that tooth removed.  We called, had mutual exchange of information and proceeded to the extraction.

Friday dawned and it was time for the removal of that tooth.  I was pretty upset, didn’t want a thing to do with it, but I had to proceed.  I really wanted it to be gone, have everything over with.  We went down with Sue and Lavonne into Mexico.  We got there by 3 pm, and had to wait just a short time.  The dentist was a different dentist from my Dr. Ramos.  Dr. Ramos was the one that did all my teeth with caps a few years ago.

Anyway, I was called in by 3:10.  That dentist was very cautious, calming and very nice.  He kept telling me to breath through my nose, the shots didn’t hurt at all when he put it in.  Before I knew it, it was all over.  So that was my extraction.  And today while all the gang went to a ghost town 50 miles away, I wasn’t up to going, will do that another time.

Any how, it’s time for me to quit all this extra curricular time and get back to what’s normal for us.  Enough hurting on weekends!

We had Sue’s birthday on Thursday, sure hope it was fun for her.

That’s if for me…

Lorraine

2/2/13                                                                                                                                 Chuck’s report

I’m writing our blog on Saturday as tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday and we plan on watching it with our friends over at Ed/Lavonne’s house.

We have spent the week mostly visiting with our friends who are here.  Monday, Lorraine and I did have dentist appointments in Mexico, mostly just for cleaning and a checkup.  But Lorraine had a bump on her gum and when the dentist saw it he said she had a cavity under the cap and an infection way down deep.  There was no way to save the tooth as the infection was too deep so he wanted to pull it.

But (isn’t there always a but?) he wouldn’t pull it then as he wanted us to check with her doctor to make sure it was ok with him, it being so soon after her mini stroke in November.  So the next day we had to contact her doctor in the Bay area and get them to either email or fax a note to the dentist saying he had no problems with the extraction.  We went ahead an made an appointment for Friday afternoon, the earliest they could get her in.

After the dentist finished with our cleaning and exam we stopped by one of the many pharmacy places there in Mexico.  They have the same pills and such as here, the only difference being the writing on bottles is in Spanish vs. English.  And the biggest difference is the price, about 1/3 of what we would pay here, even the $4/month at Wal-Mart.

So we picked up a bunch of meds then stopped by one of the many liquor stores.  The liquor stores down there have little stands inside where they give out samples of some of their wares.  We stopped by two of the sample stations, one was Tequila and the other was Tequila and other bottles.  We are not big drinkers so we couldn’t sample too many but Lorraine did find a bottle of Brandy Alexander that she liked so we bought it for $6.

Our dentist appointments were for 12:00 and 12:30 so by now it was almost 2:30 and the wait to go back through the border was pretty long.  I told Lorraine I would wait in line and she should wait for me near the main gate.  We were in line for just over an hour but it was the busiest time of the day, according to the border agents.  But, we had no problem getting back, other than the long wait.  The first year we were in Yuma, the line was over three hours long, since then they have remodeled and now they have 4 agents instead of only two so they can move folks along faster.

Tuesday, Lorraine needed to do some shopping so we went to Wal-Mart and a nice local grocery store, Frys.  Later Lorraine fixed a nice fried chicken dinner for us.  After dinner we met with the group and went over to the bingo game put on here at the park.  While we aren’t big on bingo games, we did have fun with our group of friends, even though no one won.

Next day we met with our friends, TJ/Sharon, who are from Washington and have a lot down here that we have shared with them one year.  They built a casita on their lot when we were here a couple of years ago and this year they decided to make this more of a home port so they had just bought a house in a development and moved into it last week.  We were anxious to see their new home and visit with them.

We had a great visit, got caught up with each other’s lives and medical issues.  Seems they have the same problem as most of our friends, the doctors tell all of us we are getting o-l-d.  I think it’s a big conspiracy and they just don’t like us.  We also had our mail and a package delivered to their place so we picked it up too.  Thanks for the visit and letting us have our mail sent there TJ/Sharon, we had a good time with you two.

After we got back to the rig, Rob/Norma had made plans to go to the local casino for a buffet dinner and asked if we wanted to go too.  Unfortunately, the casino had closed their buffet so we ended up eating at a café but it was good food.  Just after we ordered our meal, we got a call from Steve/Sandy who were just leaving Mexico after their dentist appointment.  Sandy had gotten a root canal on a tooth but it wasn’t successful so she too had to return later to have it extracted but they did stop by.  So once again, we had a good time visiting with friends while eating, two things RVers do very well.  After dinner we, of course, had to try our luck on the slots.  Although everyone tried hard, none of us won money on the slots, surprise, surprise.

Next day, Thursday, was Sue’s birthday.  She didn’t want any big fuss made over this but they did agree that we could go to breakfast/brunch.  We made tentative plans to go to Cracker Barrel, one of our favorites.  But as the ladies talked things over, we ended up at Red Lobster instead.  I don’t do seafood but they had food for us land lubbers too.  Once again, we were a noisy bunch and had a great time and the food was good.  Only thing missing was Steve/Sandy had to return to Mexico for Sandy’s dental work so they weren’t with us.

After brunch, the gals went in one car and went shopping while the guys came back to our rigs.  I have still been experiencing problems with the satellite reception on our front TV.  I had bought a new cable and two new connections and needed to install them.  To get to the hookups meant I had to remove the boxes and the TV so Mark once again offered to help me (actually I helped him but you know what I mean!).

The HDMI cable I bought was an 8 foot, we both thought a 6 foot long one would be enough and wanted a little extra.  But when we got it run through the cabinets it wasn’t quite long enough.  I was going to make a run to the store and there happened to be a local cable guy working on the rig next to us.  I jokingly asked him if he might happen to have a 12’ cable I could have and he said sure and gave me one.  Boy was I pleased, saved me a trip and it was a good one too.

So just a few minutes later, Mark and I finished up with everything and once again we are back in the TV business.  I’m hoping we don’t have any more issues but if we do, it almost has to be the Direct TV receiver because we’ve changed out everything else.

Because Lorraine was to have her tooth pulled Friday afternoon, I wanted to make sure she had a good lunch first.  Sue and Lavonne wanted to go to Mexico while we were there so we stopped by to pick them up first.  They had already eaten so we dropped them off at a mall across the street while Lorraine and I had a good lunch at Cracker Barrel.  As I said earlier, this is one of our favorites and we haven’t been to one in a couple of years.  Lorraine really likes their breakfasts so she had breakfast and I had a good roast beef lunch.

After lunch, we picked up Sue and Lavonne and continued on to the parking lot at the border.  Lorraine’s appointment was for 4:00 and we got there just after 3:00 so we made plans to meet at the center “shopping” area at 4:45, hoping Lorraine would be finished by then.

On Monday, Lorraine had to wait almost an hour past her appointment time before she could get in to see the dentist and we were afraid it would be worse late in the afternoon, especially on Friday.  But to our surprise, we only waited a few minutes before she was called back to the “CHAIR”.  I was able to be with her the whole time to be moral support for her.  The doctor showed us the tooth and the infection that was on the very bottom of the root.  I thought it looked a bit like a tail, first time I’ve every seen that.  The dentist also said it would be a good idea to close up the hole with a stich or two that need to stay there for a week.  Altogether, it was less than 1/2 hour after they started that we walked out of the office, minus one tooth.  Lorraine said it didn’t hurt, she only felt pressure, no pain, yea.

It was a few minutes before 4 so we headed to the meeting place but of course the gals weren’t there yet.  Lorraine had a prescription for pain pills so we headed over to get it filled.  Low and behold, Sue and Lavon happened to be there too, amazing with all the folks in town.  So it wasn’t long before we headed over to get in line to return back to the US.  We were surprised to see the line was very short, only about a 10 minute wait, or so we thought.

Lorraine and I got in one line, the gals got in the other.  Lorraine and I got through with no problems on our line but they had two people in the other line that were getting a thorough exam, don’t know what they had but both of them were escorted back to Mexico.   This, of course, slowed down the line so it was about 5 minutes before the gals made it through, with no problems I might add.

We returned to the coach and I got Lorraine settled in, stopped by to give an update to the folks and thank Steve for walking Misty while we were gone.  We had a quiet night watching TV before going to bed.  I made sure Lorraine took her pain pills even though she didn’t think she needed them.

This morning, Lorraine has a bit of pain, no bad but enough we didn’t go with the group when they took off to visit a ghost town about 50 miles away.  We are just taking it easy for today, not planning on any activities except for a short walk later.

The weather has been pretty dry since the day after we had our rigs washed/waxed except for one rain storm as we returning from the casino on Wednesday evening.  We drove through a heavy rain with lots of lightning, but it wasn’t at the park yet when we got back.  We stopped over at Dennis/Barb’s rig for a visit with them.  It wasn’t long before the storm showed up at the park, not as much rain and the lightning was in the distance however.

Since then, it’s been getting a bit warmer each day.  It got up to the mid 70s yesterday, same forecast for today, very nice with low humidity.  Because we are on the weekly or daily rate, our electricity is included so we have been running the air conditioners when needed.  Of course, with the clear skies at night, the temperature drops quickly after the sun sets so we use the heat pump as needed at night for heat.  This morning when I first went outside, it was almost warm enough that I didn’t need the light jacket I had put on.  It wasn’t long before the sun climbed a bit higher and started to warm things up nicely, maybe it will get higher than the mid 70s as it got a good start this morning.

We had paid for a week at this park, our plans were to leave on Friday but with Lorraine needing her tooth pulled, we decided to stay through the weekend and leave on Monday.  And that brings us back to the Super Bowl tomorrow at Ed/Lavonne place.  Rob/Norma and Dennis/Barb are from Canada and don’t follow football so they decided to pursue other entertainment.  But that’s ok, everyone is free to do their own thing, that’s another good thing about this RV life.

Steve/Sandy are members of the Escapee camping club and offered to get us into their park with them in Benson, AZ, the other side of Tucson.  They don’t take reservations, apparently they have a “first in, first out” policy for members meaning if they are full, the folks who have been there the longest have to leave the next morning so the new arrivals can have a spot.

We will probably leave here on Monday, it’s about a 5 hour drive to Benson.  We are thinking we will be there two weeks and explore the surrounding area but we may just make that a week then move over to a place in Tucson for a week.  Or maybe we will stay there two weeks then move to Tucson, what a decision.

Rob/Norma and Dennis/Barb had decided to stay here for a month so we will head out before them.  All of us want to explore a bit of Arizona so I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see them either in Tucson or Phoenix later.  They want to be back in British Columbia, Canada early in April so in the next two months, no telling where they or us will be.

Lorraine didn’t take any pictures this week so I won’t add any here.  So that means I’ll close this now and get it posted.

Thanks  Chuck
